Kodanda: The Divine Bow of Ram — Name, Origin and Powers Explained

June 14, 2026 · By Sunil Chandra Saha · 4 min read

Quick answer: Lord Ram’s bow is called Kodanda (also written Kodandam or Kothandam), which is why Ram is worshipped as Kodandarama, “Ram who holds the Kodanda”. It is a different bow from Pinaka, the bow of Shiva that Ram broke at Sita’s swayamvar. Below: where Kodanda came from and what made it divine.

Every great divine warrior has a weapon that defines him.

Let’s talk about some iconic bows of Hindu history and mythology from Purana, Ramayana, Mahabharat and even ?

For Arjuna, it was Gandiva. For Karna, it was Vijaya which is said to be the bow of Parshuram. For Shiva — Pinaka, and Vishnu- Saranga!

But Ram — the warrior prince of Ayodhya — we see it in every idol, every imagery ever drawn — a bow in his hands.

This bow was given to him, much before he used it to overpower sword of Shiva- Chandrahasa in the hands of Raavan. It was given by Vishwamitra, before Ram was being trained to fight demoness TADAKA.
A bow which was created much before Ram was even born. Because plans of universe starts rolling much before anything happens.

The Bow of Destiny

Kodanda was amazingly special bow. Forged by the hands of divine craftsmen, its origin is traced back to the Vishwakarmas, the celestial architects. Legends say it was blessed with the ability to hold astras beyond imagination — astral weapons that could burn, flood, or destroy entire armies.

But one weapon made it unforgettable — the Brahmastra. Ram recieved Bramhastra later in his jungle exile from Rishi Agastya.

The Brahmastra, gifted by Lord Brahma himself, was the most destructive weapon in mythology. It was not meant for common battles — it was the ultimate last resort. Only warriors chosen by dharma could wield it without burning themselves.

Ram’s Kodanda carried that fire. With this bow, he was not just a Prince or a warrior. He became the chosen avatar — the one who would face Ravana and his mighty Chandrahasa.

Why Ram? Why Kodanda?

Kodanda could only be held by one who lived in absolute balance — discipline, compassion, and unshakable will. That is why it belonged to Ram alone. As Ramayan started with one question in it’s first written verse — is there an ideal man?
One with 16 characteristics as told by Naarad ji- someone capable enough to use this weapon.

It was his companion through exile, battles, and finally in the war of Lanka. Every arrow from Kodanda was not just a weapon — it was dharma in motion.

Why This Story Still Matters

When you read the best mythological books or modern mythological fiction by any Indian writer, the story of Rama and Kodanda always shines through. Even in works like Weapon of Ram, the echo of this divine bow reminds us that true power is not in the weapon — it is in the one who wields it.

If you’re searching for Ramayana-based fiction, start with the story of Kodanda. You will find story of KODANDA and it’s real powers in the book — WEAPON OF RAM.
